Project 2: Exercise 1: TikTok Video

Project 2: Exercise 1: TikTok Video Briefing

Week 1 | Explain TikTok and Suggest Three Favourite TikTok Video

TikTok is a social media platform that allows users to create and share short videos with others. In recent years, the app has experienced tremendous growth in popularity, especially with younger people. Short-form videos are one of its distinguishing features, making it a popular option for people who want to absorb content quickly and effectively.

In addition of being entertaining, TikTok has developed into a potent marketing tool for companies. The platform is being used by brands to connect with their target market and market their goods in fun and interesting ways. The site is also being used by producers and influencers to promote their work and establish their individual brands.

Below are my top three favourite TikTok content:
@mini.hyung Support for Jisoo’s debut «Flower» 🌺 #jisoo#jennie#rose#lisa#blackpink#dance ♬ FLOWER - JISOO
Figure 1.1 - BLACKPINK Dance Compilation by @minihyung

For this project, my vision is to produce dancing compilation video featuring the mesmerising songs of BLACKPINK. I plan to incorporate various outfits and scenes to add an extra element of excitement to the video. Furthermore, I aim to collaborate with talented individuals who are passionate about dancing and would love to join me in creating a visually stunning masterpiece.
@kdarshen If this was my mom I would runaway from home #genz #asianmom #asianmomsbelike #skit ♬ Big Boy (SZA) - Sped Up Remix - viral audios & nightcore sped up
Figure 1.2 - Impersonate on the terminology to communicate with Gen Z by @Darshen

I am interested in exploring lip sync video as it requires a combination of skills such as speaking fluently and conveying the attitude and emotions behind the words. I also believe that incorporating multiple characters into the video by a single performer could enhance the overall experience, making it more engaging and entertaining for the audience.

I think of create a dynamic and engaging video centered around the making of a delectable, easy-to-prepare dish. I believe that a video showcasing the creation of a mouth-watering sausage roll would be a great choice. To bring this idea to life, I should use a variety of camera angles and shots to illustrate the step-by-step process involved in making this delicious treat, capturing every detail from start to finish.

Week 3 - Week 10 | TikTok Idea Development & Execution

For this week, we are required to think of the content that we wanted to create with this project. Compliance to this, we need to put our ideas into the slides provided with text and moodboard. The theme given is as stated below.

Theme: Me in Campus. As a student pursuing higher education, put yourself in the shoes of a Tiktik content creator. How would you create videos that resonate your daily life/ roles as a university student?

1) Proposal (Idea Development)

Figure 1.4 - Idea Development 1_pdf, Week 3 (18 Apr 2023)

After this project were distributed, I have decided to combine my idea by dancing along with the current hit song by Jisoo from Blackpink.

Figure 1.5 - (revised) Idea Development, Week 4 (25 Apr 2023)

The rationale, description and mood board have further revised to clear the art and shooting direction. Besides, storyboard were illustrated to present to Mr. Martin to show whether it was interesting and workable or not.

Figure 1.6 - Final Idea Development, Week 8 (23 May 2023)

The shooting has begun during week 8. However, I realised that my ideas was a little bit difficult to accomplish due to the remaining time for this exercise.

2) Editing, BGM and Stickers

Figure 1.7 - Importing Footages, Week 10 (11 June 2023)

We are allow to use any devices or mediums for this exercise. So I have imported all the footage taken from my phone to iPad.

Figure 1.8 - Editing, Week 10 (11 June 2023)

Using CapCut, I follow the sequence of my storyboard, select the scene and cut the footage to the require duration.

Figure 1.9 - Overlay Video, Week 10 (11 June 2023)

Overlaying another footage on top of the scene. Although the shot size was not going with the plan, however I think I can compromise it because this video was taken not long ago from the submission date.

Figure 1.10 - Stickers, Week 10 (11 June 2023)

Believe or not. I'm rushing to complete this task so the scene taken was poor. Besides, my hand was shaky all the time and my phone was a little bit hard to focus, so I decided to use an effect to emphasise my exercise submission date.

Figure 1.11 - rough editing, Week 10 (11 June 2023)

Figure 1.12 - pre-final editing, Week 10 (11 June 2023)

Both attempt does not match with the chorus and unnecessary scenes are taking up the space for the remaining scene that was not included in these videos yet.

Figure 1.13 - Final Editing, Week 10 (11 June 2023)

I removed the details to match the chorus, as there are numerous shots of entering the library. Although the dancing part was not the complete version of the original dance move, it did include the famous hand dance.

3) Filters and Video Effects

Figure 1.14 - Filters and Video Effects, Week 10 (11 June 2023)

Bring it further, I have apply filters in TikTok, but it was not as obvious and effective (not much options) than Premiere Pro and the outcome seems to be enhancing skin whitening and correction only. After that, I have applied visual effects to avoid monotonous.

Figure 1.15 - Additional Editing, Week 10 (11 June 2023)

I could not found any interesting filters for colour correcting, thus I compromise to use the Enhance feature in TikTok but based other users' comment, this features were acted more like a airbrush to smoothen the skin.

Project 2: Exercise 2: Production Shoot

Project 2: Exercise 2: Production Shooting

Week 5 & 6 | Assign Movie and Forming of Group

BEEF | Official Trailer | Netflix

We are divided into four groups, each group will be assigned a movie to recreate several scenes from the original film and turn it into a trailer-like video. Our team, Group One, has been assigned the movie Beef. After determining the roles of each team member, we need to plan ahead and prepare for the video shoot based on the responsibilities of each role. The production crew personal task were listed here.

It's important to note that while the video production is a group task, editing and adding audio are individual tasks that should be completed before starting the final project.

Figure 2.1 - Storyboard and Props Preparation, Week 6 (09 May 2023)

Our producer, Denise and others production members have discussed over the types of shots, lightings, props and costumes for each scene. Besides, due to the limited shooting time, they also planned the expected time to complete for each scene.

Figure 2.2 - Group Discussion, Week 6 (09 May 2023)

We have discussed and attempted to replicate the scene using similar props and costumes, striving to find items that are accessible to us.

Week 7 | Production Shooting and Editing

Figure 2.3 - Selecting and Documenting, Week 7 (16 May 2023)

As there are a lot of retake scenes, thus we are require to watch every footage and listen to the audio to select the most suitable one. Thanks to group members, the video and audio selection process has shorten up.

I opened two folders, one for the downloaded video, one for the downloaded audio, it allow me to make amendments and retrieve easily afterwards. Besides, I have rename the videos and audios according to the scene and shots.

Figure 2.4 - Adobe Premiere Pro workspace, Week 7 (16 May 2023)

The chosen footage and audio are imported into Premiere Pro, I proceed to rename the folder as Project 2: Production Shoot. I utilise the Editing window to carry out the editing procedure, implementing the techniques acquired from the Week 2 exercise, specifically employing the Mark in (I) and Mark out (O) commands to trim both the footage and audio.

Figure 2.5 - Video and Audio Transitions, Week 7 (16 May 2023)

Video Transition:
- Dip to Black at the beginning and ending of the entire video
Cross Dissolve between the gap of each footage.

Audio Transition:
Constant Gain at the beginning of the video, thus the volume fade in quickly
Constant Power between the gap of each audio, which can make the fade sound less abrupt when entering another audio.
Exponential Fade at the ending, thus the sound ends smoothly with the video transition at the end.

Sound Effect:

Figure 2.6 - (Attempt 1) Production and Editing, Week 7 (16 May 2023)

Last, I export and upload the edited video to Youtube, as well as folder in Google Drive.

Week 10 | Re-Attempt (after feedback)

Figure 2.7 - Background Music, Week 10 (05 June 2023)

I had downloaded several BGM that suits for the genre of movie that I wanted to represent. Most of the BGM were thrilling.

Figure 2.8 - Adjustment Layer, Week 10 (05 June 2023)

I had added two adjustment layers to enhance the thrilling experience.

Figure 2.9 - Clip Volume, Week 10 (05 June 2023)

Remove the audio transition applied previously, the volume of the dialogues (audio) are too soft to be heard, thus I had changed my window workspace to Audio. Then I applied Music tag to all the audio clips. The clips volume were increased from 0.0 dB to 0.4 dB.

Figure 2.10 - (Attempt 2) BGM and Adjustment Layer, Week 10 (05 June 2023)

I discovered some issues in this attempt. Firstly, I noticed that the background music (BGM) does not maintain a consistent sound quality and the audio volume is not clear after exporting. Secondly, I feel that the transition between scenes lacks impact and becomes monotonous due to the repetitive use of dipping into the footage and then dipping to black.

Figure 2.11 - Video Transition and Graphics, Week 10 (05 June 2023)

To spice things up, I have added video transitions between the footages. This allows to make the entire output more interesting and suspenseful. Last, I added a graphics - text, on the end of the video. This makes the entire outputs have a good end instead of just ended at the last footage.

Additional Attempt:

Figure 2.13 - Adjustment Layer: Monochrome Fuji Eterna, Week 7 (16 May 2023)

I have attempted to apply the adjustment layer I learned about in the Week 4 exercise, specifically the Colour Correction Tutorial, in order to further enhance my final edited video.

Feedback

Week 4
Fig 1.4 - TikTok Idea Development
The statements and mood board in the slides are irrelevant to certain extend. For instance, how am I going to show the word "beautiful" that has stated in the "About Me" slide. Moreover, the mood board should shows what we wanted to show in our TikTok video, maybe different shot size and camera lens to emphasise it.

Week 6
Fig 1.5 - (revised) TikTok Idea Development
Seems good, advice to take a trail shoot first to see how it look.

Week 8
Fig 2.6 - (Attempt 1) Production and Editing
The output is only a rough cut. No narrative (story), no music, no colour correction. Besides, Mr. Martin has questioned on why I decided to include the NG take? (NG=no good). After that a senior's sample was provided, Mr. Martin advise to make a thriller, or love story, or anything.

Reflection

Doing this project was really great and fun. We got to learn and connect with people at the same time. The lectures and teammates were friendly and supportive, which made the shooting process easier. It was interesting to notice that instead of being called student designers, we were often referred to as content creators, and it felt different after completing this project.
