REFLECTION

Experience
I can say that these 13 weeks of hurdles were exhausting and torturous at times. I recall feeling a lot of insecurity during my first month. Furthermore, as a new student at Taylor's University, I must work hard to adjust to a new environment while remaining interested in new challenges, such as Typography. Before our semester began, I assumed Typography was a simple module that focused on basic study of fonts and presumably some keyboard keys only.

However, on our first day of Typography, we are asked to open a blog and are told what to do and what not to do in this class, which provokes me to panic and become frustrated. Furthermore, instead of the tasks being assigned in week 2, they were assigned in the first class. To be honest, my heart was beating at the time because I had no idea why we needed to express the word and we weren't allowed to include any graphic elements.

In spite of that, as I reflected on the entire journey, I realised that it wasn't all that difficult, as I believe it was largely dependent on Mr. Vinod's teaching methods in class. Mr. Vinod provides feedback on a weekly basis, as long as we completed the tasks that he had scheduled for each week. Mr. Vinod does not easily reject a design or an idea; instead, he will ask us the concept behind our design and, based on that, will explain why this design works or does not work. So, as an individual with no experience in this field, we felt better because we knew what and how to improve our existing design work.

Observation
Typography differs from other design modules in that there are many things that must be considered and carefully observed on the existing one so that when we are creating our own design, we can have a direction on how to maintain consistency, such as creating font. While working on Task 3 - Font Design, I did not study properly and did not grasp the fundamentals of typography, so I was unable to create something distinct from my peers. Aside from that, being observed by looking at senior and peer e-portfolios aids me in carrying out every task, such as the evidence of progressions, attempts/ sketches on each task that we should put it in the post of the specific task.

Findings
Initially, I realised that I did not have any strengths in this subject, so I always interact with my classmates and use their ideas and concepts as references to improve my own design. However, due to my carelessness, I frequently fail to apply the knowledge that was taught in class. In Task 1 - Exercise 2, for example, I used serif fonts for my headlines and body text. I did not study well for Task 3 on deconstructing letterforms, so I was unable to maintain the width of each letterform and had to struggle with it for weeks.

Aside from that, I learned from this module that in order to produce good work, we need to spend more time on conducting visual research and study on relevant materials and having several sketches for each task. For instance in Task 2, I did not conduct proper research on what is Bauhaus, thus in my first attempt on creating the layout, I was failed to receive approve from Mr. Vinod. However as Mr. Vinod stated in his class, "risk-taking is part of creativity, thus if we dare to step outside of our comfort zone, we are on the path to becoming a good designer." Thus every time when giving a new task, I tell myself to abide to this rules and I push myself to attempt more and try harder to improve my competitiveness in the future and strengthen my confidence on creating.
