Class Summary
Class Summary
Today's classes were cancelled. However, we were told to complete all of our assignments, including this particular one, and upload the necessary components to our blog.
Week 14
Week 14
Class Summary
Today is the last day of class with Mr. Vinod for the semester. After reviewing our Final Compilation and Reflection blog, he advised us to read books or attempt our tasks again during our break and the following semester, as he stated that most people struggle to survive in Advanced Typography due to a lack of revision of basic typographic knowledge. As a result, they struggle to achieve the learning outcomes that are expected of them. The class was lastly dismissed.
*No MIB because the instructions there are for sticker design.
I made the decision to go with the first design as can see in Fig. 1.8. This is because the first idea that my partner and I came up with together was this one. In addition, I like the composition. Even though it is simple and straightforward, the festivities are still featured. The notion of togetherness is illustrated in this design's circle, where bunnies are protruding from the background. The entire family was coming out to meet folks in a way of signalling the approaching rabbit year.
Technical limitations prevented the frame from being coloured into gold or bronze. After numerous efforts, I tried to incorporate additional Chinese components, but I feel the circle and rabbits are sufficient. As this angpow will be given to Jaya Grocer customers, it was also presented in two languages for the wording. We felt that this was important because Malaysia is a multicultural nation and we all celebrate different festivals together.
On the other extreme, I discovered that I am getting better at creating because I literally lack the abilities, knowledge, life experience, and motivation to create what is in my head. But due to the techniques and abilities I've learnt from all the lectures, I can now complete the majority of the work by myself after all these weeks.
INSTRUCTIONS
The Jaya Grocer AngPow Design Competition
✅ To cultivate and discover the young talents
✅ To uncover the exciting retail experience of Jaya Grocer
Thematic:
-
Prosper with the flavour of togetherness
To emphasize prosperity in quality time with family and friends as well as
to remind ourselves that the bond of family and friends should remain strong
to produce tasteful outcomes to our efforts.
Students are free to design based on the theme of Togetherness

Figure 1.2 - Dimension for the AngPow Design |
Size: 85 mm (W) x 165 mm (H)
As we are assigned to a theme, thus it was limiting my imagination, however after conducting visual explorations, I quickly sketch out the ideas in my head. My concepts for this task is minimal and simple and as the timeframe given is quite short and it will be time-consuming when we are required to work in group as both parties need to discuss on the design concept, elements, colour and etc.
The designs are mostly follow the design principles learned in other module such as balance and repetition.
Besides, we also give more attempts on Design #5 and try on different combination of colour. For this design, we try to put the greeting on top/ bottom/ side of the AngPow. However, we think it will distract the main subject. Thus, we think of including the greeting surrounded by the rabbits' ears and we kinda like it.

- Idea Explorations in AI
After discussion with my partner, we have reached out to the Internet to look for the elements and various design of rabbits. Then based on that, we downloaded the images and use image trace and clipping mask to create a few designs for this task. The designs are mostly follow the design principles learned in other module such as balance and repetition.
*the dimensions are not true, for demonstration purpose only.

After creating several designs, we decided to have several combination of colour as we think different colours will allow increase the attractiveness of the AngPow.

Rationale
I have submitted all the designs. However, I decided to choose this one as my final outcome for blogging purpose. FEEDBACK
Week 12
- Design #5, the circle thing is nice, does not directly tell people that it is a rabbit ears. Can try to do type expression using the word Togetherness.
REFLECTION
Experience
Mr. Vinod gave us the lightest work he had ever given us. After working through the exercises and tasks, it was refreshing to have this task. Being able to freely design something that reflects the concept of togetherness made it a relaxing task ever. Additionally, I believe that since this assignment requires group collaboration, the tension is undoubtedly reduced. Additionally, working in a group enables me to connect with new people, and discussing designs is enjoyable. We are both pondering of ways to make our ideas a reality.
Observations
I see that choosing a good partner is crucial while creating a design as a group. Since both partners must do the same amount of work, neither can rely on the other. Due to my inability to think critically when performing this work, I thus take the initiative to conduct visual studies and make a few preliminary sketches. However, my partner will do the digitising half. I noticed that when conducting this task, the atmosphere in class were great. We are not that tension as compared with the previous tasks.
Findings
When performing this assignment, I've discovered that I'm in a passive connection. I believe this is because I lack the confidence to express my ideas and the skills necessary to turn them into sketches. As a result, when working on this task, I was unable to get the courage to comment on the ideas of my team. In addition, because of my prior experiences, I consistently fall short of my teacher's standards. Second, I should add that I'm still new to using AI, thus I was unable to help when one of my team members ran into a technical issue. On the other extreme, I discovered that I am getting better at creating because I literally lack the abilities, knowledge, life experience, and motivation to create what is in my head. But due to the techniques and abilities I've learnt from all the lectures, I can now complete the majority of the work by myself after all these weeks.

Chapter 12 - Typographic Design Process (pg 221 - pg 249)
The process of making involves a struggle with the unseen. Whether an individual is making music, a paintings, or a chair, the struggle of where to start and where to go is always there. Every project has its own set of difficulties, and there is no guaranteed formula for problem-solving.
The use of highly organised methodologies and chance operations can both be used in the design process. Designers frequently operate in a space between these two poles, between intuition and rationality. On rare occasions, an issue actually answer appears as a brilliant scrawl on a dinner napkin, but more often than not, fixing a problem is a journey that calls for bravery, perseverance, and confidence in navigating through uncharted territory.
When a designer decides to take on an issue, a series of actions known as the design process gets established. It continues until the problem conditions are fulfilled or until a deadline is achieved. Rarely is the procedure predictable, moving from point A to point B in a straight line. Reading a road map is more like how the design process works. There are numerous ways to go to the preferred destination. It will probably take longer to get there if side routes are taken. However, side roads are typically more fascinating than heavily used freeways.
