Practical
Project 2A - Digital Imaging Exercises 1 & 2
For today's practical, we are assigned to follow the instructions from W6_Recolouring Breakdown for Project 2A: Photo Manipulation -
Recolouring.
For this task, it is separated into 2 section where (Part 1) we
need to follow the guidance of Mr. Martin to apply colour to the Black &
White image. Then, (Part 2) we are to select an image provided in the
drive file, then adopt the same steps and techniques to change Black and White
image to coloured image.
Part 1 - Turn B&W photo into Colour Photo
Slides 1 - Digital Imaging Exercise 2 - Part 1
Progressions:
After downloaded the image from the files provided in the tutorial
slides. I followed the video tutorial demonstrated by Mr.
Martin.

Figure 1.1 - Progressions, Week 7 (10 Oct 2022) |
First, I created a new layer and rename it as face, so I can trace back
easily in the future. Then I coloured the face by selecting the Brush Tool
and adjust the size and hardness, as demonstrated by Mr. Martin.
Besides, I used the Eraser Tool to make correction and refine the
edge of the selected features. After that, blending mode - overlay is
applied to the face layer. I repeated the steps subsequently for the hair,
eyes, shirt and lips.
Shortcut Keys I learn:
] - increase Brush size
[ - decrease Brush size
To adjust the Hardness - Ctrl + Opt + Click, then drag to upwards to soften the brush, vice versa.

Part 2 - Recolouring B&W Photo- Advanced Level
Exercise 1: Model
For this exercise, we were instructed to download the materials from the
tutorial slides and follow the demo video guided by Mr. Martin.

Figure 1.3 - Progressions, Week 7 (10 Oct 2022) |
First, I roughly select the hair with Quick Selection Tool, then I refine
it in the Select & Mask mode. For the view mode, I select overlay and
use the Brush Tool to brush over the edges. After that, create a new solid
layer by using the colour picker to choose the hair colour. Then, I drag
and drop the hair layer mask to the new solid layer to replace the initial
layer mask. I added blending mode - Soft Light, to ensure the colour
doesn't look too weird. Later in step 2, I applied the same process for the face and
added a Hue/ Saturation Layer to make the skin look more warm and
pinkish in step 3.

Figure 1.4 - Progressions, Week 7 (10 Oct 2022) |
I had repeated the same steps for the fur, lips and earring by creating a
layer masks with using the Quick Selection Tool to roughly make selection,
then refine the mask with Select and Mask mode. Then I create a new solid
layer for the specify item/ layer. After that, I use blending mode - Soft
Light to blend the layers and filter well together. For the background, I
added selection from all layers and add to new layer mask. I clean the mask
with Brush Tool and invert the layer mask. Last, I created a new solid
colour for the background.

Exercise 2: Men
I have select an image from the drive folder and apply recolouring that
had learned previously.
After having the experience on how to colour Black & White image, I
started to look for hair and skin references that shown in Fig. 1.7 from browser.

Figure 1.8 - Hair and Brows, Week 7 (10 Oct 2022) |
In Fig. 1.8, I use the quick selection tool to apply a vector
mask onto the hair and brows and refine it by using the Select and Mask
mode. Then, I apply a new solid colour - Nude, on top of the masked image
and pick the layered mask to the same position of
the solid colour and apply Soft Light Blending Mode to both layers. Then, I
rename it as Hair and Brows accordingly.

Figure 1.9 - Skin, Week 7 (10 Oct 2022) |
In Fig. 1.9, I utilise the same technique for the skin. First, I use
the quick selection tool to select the whole face, then subtract the eyes
and lips from the selection. Second, I create a new solid colour layer -
something Orange to nude, and apply Overlay Blending Mode to it. Then, I
drag the layer to the side of the solid colour and rename it as skin.

Figure 1.10 - Eyes and Lips, Week 7 (10 Oct 2022) |
In Fig. 1.10, for the eyes and lips, I repeat the same steps and pick
Blue and apply Overlay Blending Mode for the eyes and pick Red and apply
Soft Light Blending Mode for the lips.

Figure 1.11 - Shirt and Background, Week 7 (10 Oct 2022) |
In Fig. 1.11, I applying the steps used previously to the shirt and
background. After that, I picked Tiffany Green and apply Multiply Blending
Mode to the shirt and remain the original effect for the background using
Green.
