Lecture

Intro to After Effect

After holidays, we finally continue the class with Mr. Fauzi. First, Mr. Fauzi notified us that there would be replacement for the two sessions where crashing with the previous public holidays. Second, Mr Fauzi knew that most of us still incomplete Project 2, thus he has extended the deadline until this weekend (Sunday).

After that, Mr Fauzi introduce the Basic Understanding on How to Link Adobe Photoshop Layers into After Effects and Understanding the Compositing Concept from Still Images to Moving Images. Besides, Mr Fauzi introduce us the interface, function and some features of After Effect.

According to what I had learned, Adobe After Effects is mainly an animation software used for animation, visual effects, and motion picture compositing - where the part we will be focusing on for this project. Thus Mr. Fauzi would want us to pay extra attention on today's sessions.

(image from PPI)

Other than that, I also learned that this software is used in the post-production phase, and has hundreds of effects that can be used to manipulate imagery, where allow us to combine layers of video and images into the same scene.

On top of that, Adobe After Effects takes a different approach for creating movement. Motion graphics animation works by manipulating vector and rasterised art to create and tell a story. We can integrate physical based media as well through photographs and videography.

Pre-Compositing in Adobe Photoshop
Transforming still images (graphic elements and photography) into moving images.

Basically, Photoshop is a platform to composite the layers. Then the layers need to be arrange and rename accordingly so that it will be organise and easy to be animated in After Effects.

In After Effects, we can import elements such as images, video, vector and more into it. All the layer elements need to be organised and synchronised to the external software platforms such as PS and AI. In addition, we also learned that After Effects files does not embed its media, it links to it.

Tutorial

Interface, Layer & Tools

During tutorial, Mr. Fauzi demonstrates on creating, rename and separating layers in Photoshop. In addition, importing the .PSD folder to After Effects. After that, he teaches us the motion picture compositing in After Effects and we were instructed to start the exercise afterwards. Lecture slides, tutorial video and samples were provided along with the announcement.

Practical

After Effects Exercise

Instructions:
1. Download the PSD composition below:
    https://drive.google.com/file/d/197rXGH_g-lLEt-0K9__mcKrLIYIaXtQp/view?usp=sharing
2. Import the W10_ANIMATE.psd into Adobe After Effects.
3. Create a composition setting 1080 px (Width) x 1920 px (Height), Duration 15 second
4. Create a keyframe animation to the layers using Position (P), Scale (S) & Masking path.
5. Render output: Quicktime (.MOV) or .MP4

Pre-Progress:
1) Create folders and synchronise in Adobe After Effects.
2) Open AE and named as W10. Create folders for 01 - 06. *AE always empty so we need to import file.
3) Psd file > Import file > PSD folder > Import as Composition > Retain Layer Sizes > Editable Layer Styles > Move to Pre-Comp. *Footage is Flat
4) Then W10 Animate Layers move to 04-PSD.
5) We need to create keyframe animation to the layers using (P), (S) & Masking Path. Thus, change the duration in composition setting to 15 seconds.
